Born in Guangzhou of southern China, John Woo (Wu Yusen) grew up in Hongkong, where he began his film career as an assistant director in 1969, working for Shaw Brothers Studios. He directed his first feature in 1973, and has been a prolific director ever since. He created action classics like "A Better Tomorrow", "The Killer", "Hard-Boiled", "Bullet In The Head" and also the classic bullet-proof hero Chow Yun-Fat. Following the success of "Broken Arrow" and "Hard Target", two Hollywood films, Woo's another hit "Face/Off" (John Travolta/Nicolas Cage) was released in July 1997. He reportedly plans to stay working in the US. |
